The "Alte Waage" is located right next to the historic Brakel town hall near the market square, thick walls and the restored Gothic stone gable underpin the tradition that it was the residential tower of the Knights of Modexen, which was built here around 1350 due to the troubled times , Sought refuge with his family in the fortified city.

The "old scales" was the last knight seat in the city of Brakel. In 1479 the building was mortgaged to the city and in 1553 it became their property. The city used the massive building as a city scales and grain store until 1840. The grain came from the natural taxes that the citizens had to pay to the city, and the price of bread for the baker's guild was also set here. In 1868, the two upper floors were converted, which were then used as apartments, with a fire-fighting equipment room on the ground floor. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the "Alte Waage" also housed a detention cell that was used by a police station. As a result of extensive renovation work in 1980, the representative building was given multifunctional use by the city of Brakel. A cellar excavation brought to light the remains of a tiled stove, which the town's wagon servants are likely to have warmed up on. As a result of the extensive renovation, the council meeting room was created on the 2nd floor, the city archive on the 1st floor and an exhibition room on the ground floor, in which various temporary exhibitions are still held today. In 2012, the city of Brakel then acquired the listed “Haus Gaentzsch” next to the “Alte Waage”, which was extensively renovated in the following years. There was a connection to the existing building of the "Alte Waage", as a result, at the beginning of November 2018, an energetically positive (neutral?), Modern and barrier-free administration building with around 340 square meters of office space was ready for occupancy and the renting of an external administration building was no longer necessary. Since then, the council meeting room on the upper floor of the "Alte Waage" has also been barrier-free due to an installed elevator. The historical buildings fit harmoniously into the Brakel cityscape.
