"Elegant and sober, the cream facade of the mansion erected on Place Buffon expresses something of the temperament of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon. The naturalist, born in Montbard in 1707, chose the exact place of his birth in 1734 to build this beautiful residence in the pure neoclassical style.

From the square, which resounds with the jacquemart of the town hall, not far away, we pass under the porch dominated by high rectangular windows and plaster decorations to end in a long paved courtyard.

There prevails the same rigor and the same harmony, which can be admired from the two terraces which are accessed by double flight stairs. You have to imagine the complex embellished with a garden and an orangery, as Buffon designed them at the beginning of his vast Montbard enterprise.

History
Following the death of his mother, Louis Buffon moved to Paris, anxious to get away from his father, remarried to his great fury at the age of fifty with a young girl of twenty-two, Antoinette Nadault.

Threatening him with a lawsuit, he obtains the free disposal of his fortune and recovers lands that his father had alienated in Montbard. He had his father's house demolished and the Hôtel de Buffon built, fitted out a menagerie, a laboratory and his study. Buffon's hotel was the first stage of its success."
