“Schuin tegenover de ingang van Bronbeek staat het Oude Tolhuys. Dit voormalige tolhuis aan Velperweg 166 werd in 1882 gebouwd en is nu een gemeentelijk monument. Het was tot 1979 sigarenwinkel en werd daarna speelgoedmuseum. In 1984 betrok Makelaarshuys Kuyk van Oldeniel het. Op zijn website ronkt de makelaar over een prachtige zichtlocatie aan de Velperweg tegenover Landgoed Bronbeek. Eind jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw was het gebouwtje bijna gesneuveld. Dappere raadsleden behoedden het voor sloop.

Vandaag de dag betaalt (bijna) iedereen (wegen)belasting, maar in de negentiende eeuw werd er nog volop tol geheven. Zo was men om Arnhem te mogen betreden betaling verschuldigd. Om dat allemaal georganiseerd te laten verlopen was voor dat doel een tolhek-met-tolhuis geplaatst. Het was weliswaar idyllisch, maar naarmate de tijd verstreek verdween deze wijze van belastingheffing. Paard-en-wagen werd min of meer geschiedenis en op deze wijze de staats- of gemeentekas spekken raakte achterhaald.

Het tolhuisje op de hoek van de Van Remagenlaan kwam – naarmate de verkeersdrukte toenam – steeds meer in de weg te staan. Ongeveer een kleine veertig jaar geleden dreigde vanwege wegverbreding en aanleg van een busbaan het tolhuis het loodje te leggen. Samen met onder anderen Arnold Brouwer stak PSP-er Aris Kon daar een stokje voor. Brouwer, die toentertijd voor de PvdA in de gemeenteraad zat, zette met onder anderen Kon een lobby op touw tot behoud van het tolhuis. De Verkeerscommissie waarin zij zaten slaagde in haar opzet. De kruising met de Velperweg werd aangepast, de busbaan kwam er niet en het tolhuis bleef gespaard.”

“Diagonally opposite the entrance to Bronbeek is the Oude Tolhuys. This former toll house at Velperweg 166 was built in 1882 and is now a municipal monument. It was a cigar shop until 1979 and then became a toy museum. In 1984 Makelaarshuys Kuyk van Oldeniel moved in. On his website, the broker roars about a beautiful visible location on the Velperweg opposite Landgoed Bronbeek. At the end of the seventies of the last century, the building was almost destroyed. Brave councilors saved it from demolition.

Today (almost) everyone pays (road) tax, but in the nineteenth century there was still plenty of toll. For example, in order to be allowed to enter Arnhem, payment was due. A toll gate with toll booth was erected for that purpose to ensure that everything went well in an organized manner. Although it was idyllic, as time went on, this method of taxation disappeared. Horse-drawn carriages became more or less history and in this way the state or municipal treasury became obsolete.

The toll booth on the corner of Van Remagenlaan became more and more in the way as the traffic increased. About forty years ago, due to road widening and the construction of a bus lane, the toll house threatened to collapse. Together with Arnold Brouwer, among others, PSP player Aris Kon put a stop to this. Brouwer, who was a member of the city council for the PvdA at the time, set up a lobby with Kon, among others, to preserve the toll house. The Traffic Commission on which they sat succeeded in its aim. The intersection with Velperweg was adapted, the bus lane was not built and the toll booth was spared.”
