This statue, a portrait bust of Lincoln in his 40s, was given to Supervisor Kenneth Hahn by sculptor Robert Merrell Originally, the sculpture was located inside the Courthouse. It was later moved to the current location, at the crossing Grand & 1st St, in 1989.
The base of the statue also includes texts of the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation.
The sculptor Robert Merrell Gage, was born in 1892, in Topeka, Kansas. He became a Californian resident and in 1981, in his home in Laguna Beach. In 1955, Gage won an Academy Award in the two-reel short subject category for his film, “The Many Faces of Lincoln.”
