The small local gasworks built in 1870 to supply the demands of a local community. The gas works consisted of a large stone building with barrel vault roof in galvanised iron with attached shed of similar construction but hip roofed. The gas was provided by burning coal from Newcastle and piping it around the town. The gas company closed in 1916 when the gas mains were found to be rusting.
The original cottages are now used for tourist accommodation .
