The annual Monastery Memorial Christmas Trees event in Cumberland, Rhode Island, began in 2013. Two-hundred dedicated trees are set up at the gazebo area on the lawn between the public library and senior center each year. They are decorated with photographs and other memorabilia by sponsoring families to honor loved ones. Personalized signs are posted at each tree, too. Lights will be turned on nightly in December through Christmas.
Two convenient parking areas: one, just north of the library and the other just east of the senior center - flank the quiet spectacle.
For clarification: The 500-acre property consisting of a conservation area, hiking trails, the library, and senior center is known collectively as The Monastery.
Note: The property is typically closed at dark/after regular library hours, but an exception is made for the holiday season. That said, the police regularly patrol the area at night, so be prepared to say "Hello! I'm here to visit the display!" if they happen to stop by.
