Located at the Cowan Railroad Museum are two Fairmont motorcars on display. Visitors can check them out 24 hours a day.
Taken from the Cowan Railroad Museum Webpage:
Maintenance of way crew cars. Lovingly restored to operation and painted in NC&StL livery of the fifties. Gasoline powered with a single large cylinder two stroke engine, they were called “putt-putts” because of the odd hit-and-miss sound they made when in operation. The two stroke was designed to run clockwise or counter-clockwise so as to not have to pick up the car and turn it around or use a reverse gear to run in an opposite direction. The engine is directly belted with a clutch to one axle.
