The Driffield Navigation was constructed in 1770 to connect Driffield to the port of Hull.

The Navigation started off as a canal from Driffield and then connected with the river Hull to reach the port of Hull itself.

It continued to carry cargo especially grain until 1951 and the crane was used to load and unload the canal boats.
