Dirksland is bekend sinds 1229, waarbij het genoemd wordt in een ruil van goederen tussen Graaf Floris IV van Holland met een zekere Costijn uit Zierikzee De oudste afbeelding van een wapen van Dirksland dateert uit 1673. Het vertoont een schild van goud, waarop drie golvende dwarsbalken, vergezeld van 3 ganzenpoten, geen roofvogelpoten. Dit wapen wordt ook in de Cronijk van Zeeland (1696) vermeld, zij het dat de poten hier weer op roofvogelpoten lijken. In zwart-wit komt het ook voor op de Generale Caarte van den Lande van Voorne inden Lande van Over Flacquee uit 1791. Van Alkemade (1729) noemt als wapen voor Dirksland dezelfde voorstelling (met roofvogelpoten). maar als kleuren een veld van azuur en dwarsbalken van sinopel.

Het oude wapen is in 1616 verleend in rijkskleuren, omdat de burgemeester geen kleuren had aangegeven in zijn brief.

The old coat of arms was granted in 1616 in national colors, because the mayor had not indicated any colors in his letter.
