Yeshiva University can trace its roots to a small yeshiva (traditional Jewish school), operating on the lower east side of Manhattan in 1886, which began offering some forms of secular education in addition to traditional religious studies. In the late 1920s, Under the leadership of Dr. Bernard Revel, Yeshiva College was established with a new campus to be located in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. Grandiose plans for a series of Art Deco/Moorish Revival buildings ran into the Great Depression and only the Byzantine-looking Main Building was completed. This building, now named David H. Zysman Hall, is the building seen on the stamp.

Incidentally, Dr. Revel himself was honored on a U.S. postage stamp issued around the same time as the Israeli stamp. Both stamps indirectly commemorated Yeshiva University which celebrated its centennial in 1986. The Israeli stamp was part of a set issued for the International Philatelic Exhibition held in Chicago and named AMERIPEX 86. Each stamp featured a Jewish institute of higher education in America.

The building on stamp was designed by Charles B. Meyers with construction beginning in 1928. When I visited the site, the old building was undergoing a ‘face lift’ and sported substantial scaffolding. Apparently, this renovation had been going on for some time with no end in sight. I found a 2010 photo from the public domain which shows the building from before the renovation began.

Today, Yeshiva University has three undergraduate schools and seven graduate and professional schools on campuses located both in the United States and in Israel.
