The best way to see the Azores is by renting a car. Then you can drive around at your own pace and experience the island. Including this church. It is located high on a hill overlooking the sea. As you can see in many places in the Azores, the buildings here are also decorated with motifs in blue and white. One has to look at each motif and it gives good breaks on the way up the stairs.
The weather can change quickly in the Azores and unfortunately it was a bit foggy when we visited the place.
The Nossa Senhora da Paz Sanctuary,( Our Lady of Peace Chapel) towering above the Vila Franca do Campo village, is a lovely temple of the Azores Archipelago.
The present temple dates from the 18th century and would have been built over a previous one, probably dated from the 16th century, built with an effort of the population that wanted to honour the Virgin, as in this place a shepherd once found an image of her.
During the disturbed times of the pirate attacks of the coast, the populations had a great faith in the power of this sacred temple, as it was said that it provided protection to all the believers.
The stairs are decorated with pictures of Jesus' life. The pictures are painted on tiles in blue and white colors.
