Plaque Text:
In order to maintain a water supply for the oil fields and to provide recreational areas at the Reunion Grounds, A.E. "Colonel" Humphreys dammed the Navasota River in four places. He built a community bathhouse at the dam location at the confluence with Jack's Creek.
As part of the Humphreys contract with the Reunion Grounds for abundant water at a minimal cost, he constructed improvements throughout the property - some for business operations and other for recreation and community enjoyment. This construction transformed the Reunion Grounds into a popular community swimming area from the 1920s through the 1940s until severe flood damage led to its demolition. The steps, dams, and concrete base of the slide remain today.
