The site's history dates to the early 19th century. It provided weapons iron for the War of 1812 and reached its peak in the 1850s, when the site contained a furnace, forge, gristmill, Methodist church, sawmill, large owner's mansion, store, 20 workers' houses, a blacksmith shop, and a wheelwright.

Fueled by charcoal, by the 1860s, the forge had become obsolete as iron production moved to areas where hard coal was abundant.
