This building began life as a manor house on the estate of Canadian mining magnate Andre Dorfman in 1938. It was designed by Toronto architect Ferdinand H. Marani in a French Château style not often seen in North America. Andre Dorfman named his 480-acre estate ‘RayDor.’ In 1953, Dorfman sold his estate to the Jesuit Fathers of Upper Canada who used it as a monastery and retreat for the next ten years.

In 1963, a group of investors transformed the former estate into the Upper Canada Country Club which featured an 18-hole golf course that they named “Glen Abbey” in honor of the Jesuits. The large manor house served as the club house for the golf course. The exclusive club which catered to the wealthy was not successful and the golf course closed in 1969.

In the mid-1970s, the Royal Canadian Golf Association (now Golf Canada) seeking to establish a permanent home for the Canadian Open, had the course redesigned for tournament play and relocated their headquarters and Hall of Fame to the RayDor manor house. (The redesigned Glen Abbey golf course featured a brand-new club house.) Since 1977, Glen Abbey has hosted the Canadian Open 30 times.

The Canadian Golf Hall of Fame was established in 1971 and has over 80 inductees. Besides Canadian greats such as Stan Leonard and Mike Weir, American Jack Nicklaus has also been inducted, not as a player but as a course designer. And which course did he design? The new, redesigned Glen Abbey of course.

The postage stamp, issued in 1995, was one of five different designs featuring famous golf courses across Canada. The old RayDor manor house can be seen in the inset on the stamp. Besides the Golf Canada headquarters and the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, there is also a small museum on the premises.
