Washington State University Creamery is present on campus. They make ice cream and the famous Cougar Gold canned cheese using milk from the WSU Knott Dairy Center located a short distance off campus. The creamery can be viewed from the Marc P. Bates Observation Room during business hours where there are also video presentations available. There is a sign outside the door to the observation room that says what they are making each day on the floor. The cheese and ice cream are sold in the adjacent Ferdinand's ice cream shoppe.
There are 8 flavors of cheese and 2 seasonal/limited flavors. Cougar gold was originally produced with a bacteria called WSU19 which limits carbon dioxide production which allowed the cheese to be stored in cans. Cougar gold has been sold exclusively in 30-ounce cans since 1948. Additional history: visit link
