Founded ex-nihilo in 1539 and built between 1541 and 1544, Porto-Vecchio is the last of these urban strongholds in Corsica. Since October 2019, the bastions and the Genoese Gate are registered as historical monuments.

The 5 bastions of Porto-Vecchio and the Genoese Gate

The bastion of France, the most famous. It was finished in 1542. The Genoese called it U Baluardo di a marina because it was assigned to the guard of the port. Now restored, it allows every summer to see art exhibitions, paintings and sculptures. It also has a roof terrace offering a panoramic view of the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio.

The bastion of Sant' Antonu, or di a Funtana vechja, overlooks the oldest fountain of the city, which is at the beginning of the Roman road. On its left side, a gaping hole would have been caused, according to the legend, by a cannon shot of Sampiero Corso when he took back the city from the Genoese in 1553.

The bastion of the Gate, located between the bastion Sant' Antonu and the bastion of France, faces the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio. It is only visible from outside the citadel, from the marina. It is also called the Bastion of the Cannon.

The San Giorgio bastion, named after the very powerful Genoese banking establishment. The San Giorgio Office was then the administrator of Corsica. The Bastion San Giorgio was later named after the old windmill, u mulinu à ventu, located on the hill facing it.

The bastion of the Palace, U baluardo di u Palazzu publicu. It is in this old barracks that the Genoese soldiers and officers held garrison.

The Genoese Gate
It was the only entrance to the citadel. Protected by a solid gate and machicolations, it was defended by a cannon placed high up on a platform serving as a watchtower.

This door gave direct access to the port. Today, it offers an inescapable viewpoint on the salt marshes.

The people of Porto Vecchio called this area Piazza di Po because it was certainly the place where the podestat (title given to the first magistrate of the city in the Middle Ages) lived.
