"El faro de Luarca se encuentra situado en la Atalaya, en la punta Focicón, cerrando la ensenada del puerto por oriente, a unos trescientos metros de la villa de cuyo trazado urbano se puede decir que forma parte.Se encuentra dentro del conjunto formado por la capilla de la Atalaya, el cementerio y restos de la muralla defensiva del siglo XVI. Data de 1860 y consta de vivienda para el farero y torre que se inserta en ella por el lado oeste, posteriormente se añaden nuevas edificaciones en el lado este. La vivienda tiene base cuadrada con una sola planta con desván y buhardilla en el lado este, fábrica de mampostería revocada y pintada con sillares de granito en zócalo, reborde de huecos, esquineras y cornisa. Los vanos adintelados se enmarcan con sillares de granito con molduras.
Se cubre con pizarra a cuatro aguas.
La torre de sección cuadrada, se asienta sobre una base prismática, el cuerpo propiamente dicho, de unos 5 metros de alto, se articula en tres fachadas con una vidriera en cada una de ellas en forma de arcos de medio punto enmarcados en piedra que dan luz al interior. Esquineras rematadas por sillares de piedra imitando almohadillado y línea de imposta sobre la que se asienta el arco de la ventana y cornisa con dentículos. El cuerpo se remata con una linterna que se rodea con una barandilla. El interior amplio y excelentemente iluminado recoge una escalera de caracol abierta realizada en fundición de hierro la cual de acceso a la linterna.
En el lugar donde se asienta el faro, denominado la Atalaya, existió un antiguo fuerte defensivo entre los siglos XVI y XVIII que tenía a su cargo la defensa de la villa, muy codiciada por franceses e ingleses. Es precisamente al pié de la Atalaya donde surgen los primeros núcleos de pescadores de Luarca en el barrio del Cambaral y en las estribaciones de La Carril.
Por el siglo X los hombres del gremio de mareantes se reunían en los alrededores del actual faro y se encendían fuegos para orientar las embarcaciones. Hacia el siglo XIV ya hay noticias de la ermita de Atalaya en la que los marineros pagaban una luz que se encendía en el campanario y hacía las veces de faro hasta 1850 en que el Estado levantó uno de aceite en una torre circular."

The tower with a square section, sits on a prismatic base, the body itself, about 5 meters high, is articulated in three facades with a stained glass window in each of them in the form of semicircular arches framed in stone that give light inside. Corners topped by stone ashlars imitating padding and impost line on which the arch of the window and cornice with denticles sits. The body is finished off with a lantern that is surrounded by a railing. The spacious and excellently lit interior includes an open spiral staircase made of cast iron which provides access to the lantern.
In the place where the lighthouse is located, called the Watchtower, there was an old defensive fort between the 16th and 18th centuries that was in charge of defending the town, highly coveted by the French and English. It is precisely at the foot of the Watchtower where the first fishing villages of Luarca appear in the Cambaral neighborhood and in the foothills of La Carril.
By the 10th century, the men of the mareantes' guild met around the current lighthouse and fires were lit to guide the boats. Towards the fourteenth century there is already news of the Atalaya hermitage in which the sailors paid for a light that was turned on in the bell tower and served as a lighthouse until 1850 when the State raised an oil one in a circular tower.
