Salem was established two years before Indiana became a state. To begin with it thrived on agriculture and the products of its mills and tanneries. Local businessmen established a railroad from the Ohio River to Salem and later to Lake Michigan. It also became known as a center for education with high schools and colleges pulling in students from far and wide. Because of its surrounding timber, it became home of several major manufacturers of wood products. After WWII it became the home of producers of plastics and textiles.
