The church of Saint-Marcel of Aléria was the first one built in Corsica, during the first millennium. However, it was destroyed several times, then rebuilt. The stones of the ancient Roman city were used for its reconstruction.

L'église Saint-Marcel, on le sait, a été rendue à ses paroissiens et la messe célébrée par le père Vincent a été d'une intensité particulière. Les fidèles ont pu admirer l'éclat et la luminosité de leur lieu de culte dont la transformation est spectaculaire. Une église toute neuve mais cependant toujours auréolée de ses tableaux magnifiques.
L'un d'eux est particulièrement cher aux croyants de la pieve car il est symboliquement fort. En effet, autrefois ce tableau était accroché à la place d'honneur, c'est-à-dire au-dessus du maître-autel (aujourd'hui il a été remplacé par une œuvre monumentale issue de la collection du cardinal Fesch). Il est celui qui représente Saint-Marcel à qui l'église est dédiée avec toute sa valeur emblématique. Même si la toile n'est pas signée elle a été attribuée avec une certitude absolue à Francesco Carli, l'un des peintres les plus productifs de l'école Corse du XVIIIe siècle. D'origine Lucquoise cet artiste devait épouser une jeune fille de Borgo, Antonia Maria Franceschi, et s'installa à San Lorenzo où il s'intégra si parfaitement qu'il en fut même élu officier municipal.

Ainsi ce magnifique tableau qui vient d'être restauré par Ewa Poli est-il chargé d'une sorte d'allégorie particulière. Au centre Saint-Marcel pape et martyr, coiffé de la tiare à trois couronnes bénit à sa gauche Sainte-Laurina d'Aléria (titulaire de l'église cathédrale de l'évêché d'Aléria), agenouillée elle tient au-dessus de sa tête la palme des martyrs ; à sa droite le jeune homme en habit de militaire romain, tenant lui aussi la palme des martyrs figure Saint-Pancrace.
La structure du visage de Saint-Marcel est très proche du Saint-Joseph de Rapaggio, l'attitude de Saint-Pancrace rappelle celle du Saint-Roch de Zalana. Il n'existe que deux tableaux où l'on représente Sainte-Laurine en Corse, l'autre se trouve dans l'église de Quercitellu.*
La confrérie de la Serra a relancé la dévotion à Sainte-Laurina dans le droit fil de ses certitudes : « Comme l'arbre a besoin d'être bien enraciné, notre enracinement se fait dans des valeurs, des convictions et des croyances profondes ». Magnifique.

In the center, Saint Marcel, pope and martyr, wearing a tiara with three crowns, blesses on his left Saint Laurina of Aleria (titular of the cathedral church of the bishopric of Aleria), kneeling and holding above her head the palm of the martyrs; on his right, the young man in the garb of a Roman military officer, also holding the palm of the martyrs, is Saint Francis.
The structure of St. Marcel's face is very close to that of St. Joseph of Rapaggio, while the attitude of St. Franciscus is reminiscent of that of St. Roch of Zalana. There are only two paintings of Saint Laurine in Corsica, the other is in the church of Quercitellu.
