St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Resurrection Reformed Church were used as field hospitals during the U.S. Civil War after the battle at Crampton's Gap. These two churches are included in the Burkittsville Historic District.

The cluster formed by the Resurrection Reformed Church and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School is a typical geographical grouping of such structures at the heart of the town.

A number of Union and Confederate dead were buried in Union Cemetery when the churches were used as hospitals in 1862.
