DE: Am 8. Dezember 1795 wurde in der Vestergade 17 in der süddänischen Ortschaft Tønder der spätere Astronom Peter Andreas Hansen geboren. Sein Vater Nicolay war Goldschmied und vermittelte sein Wissen an ihn weiter, welches später zu einer Ausbildung in Flensburg zum Uhrmacher führte. Recht früh fiel dabei seine naturwissenschaftliche Begabung auf und so wurde er nach einer weiteren Ausbildung in Kopenhagen ab 1821 an der dänischen Gradmessung in Holstein sowie ab 1822 der Sternwarte in Altona beschäftigt.
Mit ersten Veröffentlichungen machte er sich um 1823 in der wissenschaftlichen Welt bekannt und übernahm 1825 die Sternwarte in Gotha-Seeberg, die auf sein Betreiben hin 1859 erneuert wurde. Auf theoretischem Gebiet wurde er für die Störungstheorien der Planeten und seine Arbeiten an den in der Navigation genutzten Mondtafeln bekannt, auf praktischem Gebiet erfand und verbesserte er viele astronomische Geräte. Während seines Lebens erhielt er zudem von etlichen Universitäten und Akademien Ehrungen.
Peter Andreas Hansen starb am 28. März 1874 in Gotha, an seinem Geburtshaus wurde im ersten Stock zwischen dem linken und dem mittleren Fenster eine Marmortafel mit der Inschrift "Geburtsstätte des Astronomen P. A. Hansen *8. Dez 1795 +28. März 1874" angebracht.
Das Geburtshaus hat heute im Erdgeschoss ein Cafe mit Eisverkauf und im ersten Stock eine Wohnung.

EN: On December 8th, 1795, the future astronomer Peter Andreas Hansen was born at Vestergade 17 in the southern Danish town of Tønder. His father Nicolay was a goldsmith and passed on his knowledge to him, which later led to an apprenticeship as a watchmaker in Flensburg. His natural science talent was noticed very early on and so, after further training in Copenhagen, he was employed at the Danish degree measurement in Holstein from 1821 and at the observatory in Altona from 1822.
He made himself known in the scientific world with his first publications around 1823 and took over the observatory in Gotha-Seeberg in 1825, which was renewed in 1859 at his instigation. In the theoretical field he was known for the perturbation theories of the planets and his work on the lunar tables used in navigation, in the practical field he invented and improved many astronomical devices. During his life he also received honors from a number of universities and academies.
Peter Andreas Hansen died on March 28th, 1874 in Gotha, a marble plaque with the inscription "Birthplace of the astronomer P. A. Hansen *Dec 8, 1795 +March 28, 1874" was placed on the first floor of the house where he was born.
The birthplace now has a cafe with ice cream sales on the ground floor and an apartment on the first floor.
