HMCS Protector was commissioned in 1882 by the South Australian Government and to this day, she has been the state’s only war ship. The gun stood in this site on the Semaphore Foreshore for 85 years from 1913, in 1998 it was removed to a different site, but in 2018 after being re-furbished was reinstated in the original position.
The 6in breech-loading gun was fitted as the bow-chaser of His Majesty's Colonial Ship Protector, the colony's first and only warship. She was so designed to protect the colony by supporting the shore batteries at forts Glanville and Largs. The Protector, a 960 ton cruiser, was from 1884 until 1901 the most powerful warship, for her size, in the Southern Hemisphere.
