The station in the seaside town of Largs on the Ayrshire coast was opened on June 1st 1885 in the town centre, as the terminus of the Glasgow & South West extension from Ardrossan which ran northwards up the Firth of Clyde coast. Originally the station had four platforms which became three by the beginning of electrification during the 1980s.

A fire destroyed the signal box in 1985, and the station was then remodelled and completed in 1987 with now the two platforms, with the central platform being removed.

On July 11th 1995 a train from Glasgow Central failed to stop, and crashed through the buffers, destroying the ticket office and damaging part of the station building and two shops, before coming to a stop next to the taxi rank on Main Street. No one was killed in the accident, but the crew were injured.

The station was then rebuilt, with a new ticket office opened in 2001 and the new station building being completed in 2005.
