Plaque Text:

International and Great Northern Railroad line reached Mineola in 1873 in a race with Texas & Pacific Railroad. Texas and Pacific Line provided service from Shreveport to Dallas and International and Great Northern Line provided service from Mineola to Tyler.

International and Great Northern Railroad discontinued its operations in the 1940s. Today, all that remains is the rail bed near the Sabine River south of Mineola, now the site of the Mineola Nature Preserve.

Texas Parks and Wildlife has funded the development of the rail bed as a walking path for approximately two miles of the rail bed. Old telegraph poles, insulators, copper wire, decaying railroad ties and portions of railroad trestles stand as monuments when coal burning steam engines belched smoke and strew embers through the countryside.
