The children's librarian, Anita Ditz, suggested this project because there were plenty of programs for preschoolers, but nothing for the older children. The project focused on children in fourth through sixth grades. The students benefitted by gaining an interest in reading. The library benefitted by having an older children's program, with the possibility of repeating the program.
There was a weekly program throughout the summer for ten weeks. Each week focused on an age appropriate book and included discussion and an activity.
The books covered were Matilda, My Side of the Mountain, Chasing Verneer, Frindle, and A Long Way from Chicago.
Materials were left in the library for the program to be repeated.
