The badge is made up of 3 ostrich feathers protruding through a gold coronet. The words at the bottom Ich Dien can be translated as I serve.
Legend has it that the badge was first used by Edward, the Black Prince, the eldest son of Edward III of England in 1346. He apparently took a helmet lined with ostrich feathers from the body of one of his enemies in the battle of Crecy.
Prince of Wales (Welsh: Tywysog Cymru) is a title traditionally granted to the heir apparent to the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. That is why Prince Charles is the current Prince of Wales.
