"Spirits were brightened on a cold December afternoon when Mary Jones, wife of the late Herb Jones, officially lit the Herb Jones Memorial Fireplace in Ken Connor Park, located at the north-east corner of Kirkwood Road and Argonne. Members of the Jones and Connor families attended the celebration.

"Herb Jones’ contributions to the Kirkwood community were recognized by Dan Graham (Clifford Willard Gaylord Foundation), Kirkwood Mayor Tim Griffin and Donna Poe of the Downtown Kirkwood Special Business District.

"The protective screening and timer were installed on the ?replace unit on Dec. 28. The gas ?ame is being operated on a timer. Plantings will be installed in the park in the spring." ~ Webster-Kirkwood Times,

"Herbert (Herb) Jones, the 81-year old former mayor of Kirkwood, died on Saturday, April 25. Mr. Jones succumbed to a heart condition he had dealt with for the past few years.

"Born on Dec. 16, 1933, Mayor Jones had two brothers, Dave (Mary) and Tom (Linda.) Herb and Dave owned and operated Messenger Printing and Publishing Company, a successful business started by their father, David Lee Jones. All three of the “Jones boys” graduated from Kirkwood High School.

"Herb Jones met Mary Ella Edwards while attending Missouri University in Columbia. They were married in 1955, and had three children, Cindy (Doug) Jones Coombs; Becky (Dale) Jones Hallemeier and David (Jenny) Jones. They are the grandparents of Ben, Kevin, Katie, Sam, Megan and Joe. Last summer the couple celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

"Mayor Jones became active in the Kirkwood community at an early age. He served on countless boards, commissions, and civic organizations and was elected to various positions, including mayor of Kirkwood from 1984 to 1992.

"Mayor Jones was on the forefront of some of the most significant changes the city underwent over its long history.

“Herb Jones was my dear friend for many years. He was like a mentor to me. He was never afraid to support anything that he thought was right for his town, Kirkwood,” said current Kirkwood Mayor Art McDonnell. “In recent years I saw him often and we stopped and chatted and conferred over the issues of the day in Kirkwood. When we greeted each other we each said, ‘Hello Mayor.’ I will miss my dear friend, Mayor Herb Jones of Kirkwood, very, very much”

"Mayor Jones was part of the Kirkwood Charter Commission and also the first to serve as mayor under this very different form of government. Among his many accomplishments was to serve as an integral part of the annexation of the Meacham Park neighborhood." ~ Webster-Kirkwood Times,
