Colonel Joseph W. Kittinger, Jr., became the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean alone by balloon. The retired Col. Kittinger's world record is commemorated with a plaque at the MCO airport in his hometown of Orlando, Florida.

Colonel Joseph W. Kittinger, Jr., became the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean alone by balloon. The retired Col. Kittinger's world record is commemorated with a plaque at Orlando International Airport in Florida. The maker is mounted to a wall beside the interfaith chapel in the main terminal. The location is airside, just after the west security checkpoint. The inscription reads:

OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA

Col. Kittinger departed from Caribou,
Maine in the Rosie O'Grady Balloon of Peace
on September 14, 1984, and landed in Savona
on the Italian Riviera on September 18, 1984,
becoming the first person in history to
make a solo balloon crossing of the
Atlantic Ocean. In so doing, Colonel Kittinger
set a world distance record for balloon
flight traversing 3,527 miles in his
84 hour voyage.
