The tide clock was installed on Cockle Spit at the entrance to the port Pirie shipping channel to indicate the depth of the channels for the tall ships that used to come in so they didn't run aground on the sand. The clock's face was lit from behind so it could be seen day and night. A series of pulleys and levers rose and fell with the tide and transferred the depth to the clock face via a system of chain and wheel mechanisms.
In 1989 it was removed from the original location when it became obsolete, after being restored it was relocated to it's present position in 2013
There was thought to be another in Tasmania but there is no record of it's existence.
