The present Cathedral was built on the site of the old Romanesque
building church built in 1882 and gutted by fire in 1946 and incorporated some of the fabric of the earlier building. The remaining walls were extended 3m using local freestone, the gables were extended and the front porch was removed and replaced with a colonnade of arches.
The new cathedral was blessed and opened by 29 March 1953.
