The former Customs House was constructed in 1882 of rendered stone with arched panels to the front elevation with a parapet cornice moulding and pediment. Built on reclaimed land,it replaced an earlier timber and iron building known as the 'Camp Oven'. In 1920 the old customs house was reopened as a museum.
