"The Mast of Lalaing is a work of art by Jacques de Lalaing (1858-1917). It is an electric light pole that stands at the intersection of Avenue Paul Deschanell, Avenue Voltaire and Avenue Louis Bertrand in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek. It has been a protected immovable heritage since 2009.
The artwork bears the title The fight of tigers and snakes, is made of bronze and has a height of 22 meters.
History
During the Ghent World's Fair
The Lalaing was fascinated by felines. In 1886 he bought a tiger in the Antwerp Zoo, which he placed in the garden of his house. At the Brussels Salon of 1887 he presented a plaster design of the future lamppost. The mast was completed in 1913 for the Ghent World Exhibition. In 1926, the sculptor's heirs donated the work of art to the municipality of Schaerbeek.
In 1953 the mast, which was then completely weathered, was disassembled and kept in the municipal warehouse for more than 50 years. On June 4, 2009, the work of art was classified as protected heritage. In 2010, the mast was completely restored and returned to its original position."
