Varden in Kristiansund, is an old watchtower that was to warn of enemy ships during the Napoleonic Wars. Here was the base station for the optical telegraph between Kristiansund and Trondheim.
This tower is a copy of a tower that was in the same place. The first tower on the site was a wooden tower from 1801, which in 1892 was demolished and replaced by a brick tower. This tower was demolished in 1976 and replaced with a replica inaugurated on May 8, 1983.
The Tower is located 78 m above sea level. From the tower there is a 360 degree view with the Nordmørsfjellene as a background, mountains and fjords to the other side and the town of Kristiansund in the foreground. There is also a pair of binoculars at the top of the tower.
The tower is open every day and there is free admission.
