From the Place de la Colonne, we can see the ruins of the Château des Évêques de Cavaillon, witness to the rich history of Fontaine de Vaucluse

This castle which overhangs Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, belonged to the bishops of Cavaillon, it would date from the beginning of the 13th century. Today, only the ruins remain. Perched on the immense rocky outcrop that surrounds the resurgence of the Sorgue, the ruins form a most romantic picture.

Built around 1030 probably at the same time as the church, a deed of donation mentions it in 1034, the ruins however date from the beginning of the 13th century. It is in this castle that François Pétrarque visited his friend, Philippe de Cabassole, bishop of Cavaillon.

Depuis la Place de la Colonne, on distingue les ruines du Château des Évêques de Cavaillon, témoin de la riche histoire de Fontaine de Vaucluse

Ce château qui surplombe Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, appartenait aux évêques de Cavaillon, il daterait du début du XIIIe siècle. Aujourd’hui, il n’en reste plus que les ruines. Perchées sur l’immense piton rocheux qui cerne la résurgence de la Sorgue, les ruines forment un tableau des plus romanesques.

Construit vers 1030 vraisemblablement en même temps que l’église, un acte de donation en fait mention en 1034, les ruines dateraient cependant du début du XIIIe siècle. C'est dans ce château que François Pétrarque rendait visite à son ami, Philippe de Cabassole, évêque de Cavaillon.
