It is a symbol of the change towards modernity, without forgetting the tradition, that the city has experienced in the last two decades, with the creation of the Niemeyer Center and the transformation of the old iron bridge into a more modern, safe, comfortable and Full of colour. The San Sebastián Bridge has changed its image in time with the times. It was first made of stone, then iron, as evidenced by a vestige of the time that decorates the promenade of the estuary. Currently the San Sebastián bridge is made of steel with as many colors as the rainbow. The 42.5 meters long, 5 meters high and 7.2 meters wide of iron structure (of which today there is a fragment located on the promenade of the estuary, as a witness to the past) went, in part, to the homes of many avilesinos. The bridge, as it is known today, was built in 2006, it was replaced by a replica of the original in steel with a chromaticism that has made it a distinctive sign and icon of the city.
