The now known as the Arnao tunnel was built as an alternative to the San Martín tunnel to add the 1668 mm gauge to the line from the foundry to the San Juan quay. The reduced gauge of San Martín prevented its use in Iberian gauge.

"At present it allows car traffic between Arnao and Salinas, alternatively, regulated by traffic lights. At the mouth of Salinas, the entire front is in solid brick finished off in a line of fascia on protruding pieces and highlighting an emblem alluding to industrial work, with crossed mace and pick. In addition to the three lanes for the two widths of the Royal Company railway, it housed those of the Avilés Electric Tram Company, 1000 mm wide, on the opposite gable. This constitutes a unique case due to the presence of three different track gauges within the same tunnel. It was included in the catalog of the Inventory of the Industrial Historical Heritage of Asturias (1985-1987) with the code IPHI-607."
