The Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862 was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. It established land in each state of the union to be set aside for education. Farmer's High School of Pennsylvania, which later became The Pennsylvania State University, was designated as the land-grant school of Pennsylvania.
The frescos originated with an idea of some art history professors. The class of 1932 donated funds for the project. Henry varnum Poor, who had designed some murals in Washington DC, was asked to create the murals. They were completed in 1940.
Frescos are a type of mural that is painted on wet plaster. The entire second floor lobby area of Old Main shows Lincoln and a student planting a tree, as well as scenes from Pennsylvania.
