DE: Der im Jahr 1902 errichtete Wasserturm der Stadt Tønder wurde in der Nähe der Tøndermarschen aufgestellt. Die Turmhöhe von 40m sollte den benötigten Druck für die Wasserversorgung der Bevölkerung sicherstellen. Dafür befand sich im oberen Turmabschnitt ein Behälter, der 250 Kubikmeter Wasser enthalten konnte. Im unteren Teil befinden sich auf zwei einzelnen Etagen jeweils Fenster in Nord-Süd- und Ost-West-Ausrichtung, auf dem Dach war zudem eine Wetterfahne ohne Richtungskreuz mit der Zahl "1902" angebracht. Die Wetterfahne diente zudem dem Blitzschutz.
Mit besseren Pumpen wurde der Wasserturm zum Jahr 1980 nicht mehr benötigt. Die Stadt beschloss daraufhin, den Turm und die angrenzenden Gebäude in ein Kunst- und Kulturmuseum umzuwandeln. Leider dauerte die Umsetzung der Pläne dann noch bis 1995. Die Gelder für einen großen Teils des Umbaus stammen aus einer Stiftung, die auf A.P. Møller und H.C. Mc-Kinney Møller (Maersk) zurückgeht, für den Umbau wurde der Architekt Niels Frithiof Truelsen beauftragt. Der ummauerte obere Teil wurde dabei durch eine Glas- und Stahlkonstruktion ersetzt, sowie die Wetterfahne durch eine mit dem Schriftzug "Museum" ausgetauscht. Zugang zum Turm erhält man vom Kunstmuseum über einen verglasten Gang.
Im oberen Teil des Turms befindet sich jetzt das Hans-Wegner-Museum mit vielfältigen Exponaten des dänischen Sitzmöbeldesigners.

EN: Tønder's water tower, built in 1902, was erected near the Tøndermarschen. The tower height of 40m should ensure the necessary pressure for the water supply of the population. The walled upper part was replaced by a glass and steel construction, and the weather vane was replaced by one with the words "Museum" on it. Access to the tower is obtained from the art museum via a glazed corridor.
In the upper part of the tower is now the Hans Wegner Museum with a variety of exhibits by the Danish seating furniture designer.
