A museum is open on the first floor above a gallery of the cloister, where there are private rooms of the asylum, to retrace the period of the year 1889-1890 (from May 3, 1889 to May 16, 1890) when the Famous painter Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was housed before his early death at the age of 37, July 29, 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris. His room and his artist's studio have been reconstructed, with many reproductions of his works.

The artist is fascinated by the beauty of the landscapes of Saint-Rémy, by the quality of light, and by the serenity of the places and the surroundings, which inspires him during his 53 weeks of hospitalization, a major part of his work, with 143 oil paintings, and over 100 drawings. He was hospitalized at his request in this establishment for auditory and visual hallucinations, epileptic attacks, and bouts of dementia. The more affluent patients of this establishment can rent individual rooms, and Théo van Gogh rents there three rooms for his brother Vincent (a room, an artist's studio to paint, and a room to store his works) or this last dream. to create his “Atelier du Midi” (association of artists from the south of France).
