An unusual Christian Cross Silhouette gravestone can be found in the Lezayre Churchyard in Churchtown at the grave of Father Walmsley a Roman Catholic Priest.
The gravestone is a rich 'golden coloured' rectangle with a cut out containing a Christian Cross silhouette with an elliptical lozenge at its centre containing an engraved chalice and a communion wafter embossed with a Christian cross.
Inscribed below the silhouette is an epitaph in Latin and English chosen by Father Walmsley himself:
“ORA
BONE CHRISTIANE
PRO REVD. JOANNE WALMSLEY
STI MACALI APUD RAMSEY PAROCHO
MCMVIII – MCMXXXVII
PRAY
GOOD CHRISTIAN
FOR FATHER JOHN WALMSLEY
PARISH PREIEST OF ST. MAUGHOLD RAMSEY
1908 – 1937” The engraving of the epitaph is not very defined and is somewhat difficult to read.
Father Walmsley as well as choosing the epitaph chose the location for his grave in the Lezayre Churchyard. At the time of his passing the spot was a lonely place in the churchyard and was somewhat removed from the other graves.
