DE:
Stadtrat Jörn Oltmann schlägt versöhnliche Töne an. Gasometer refurbishment not before 2020
Schöneberg. The Schöneberger Gasometer is undoubtedly a landmark of the district. But to this day, the defining industrial structure has not been restored in accordance with the listed building standards.
The sharpest critics of this state of affairs are residents who have joined forces in the citizens' initiative (BI) "Gasometer". At the district assembly they submit inquiries to the district office at regular intervals. On their website bi-gasometer.de they reprimand the owner Reinhard Müller for breaking his promise made in 2007 to renovate the gasometer “this year”. On the contrary: the restoration of the industrial monument is "always dragged off".
The gasometer was in operation until 1995. In 2007, Reinhard Müller acquired the former Gasag plant in the Rote Insel district and has since converted it into the Euref campus. The dome-shaped foil tent inside the steel structure is noticeable on the gasometer. The “Bundestag arena” was installed in 2009. It is used as an event hall. Günther Jauch interviewed guests there in his talk show until 2015. The permit for this temporary use expires at the end of 2019.
According to a statement by the City Development Councilor Jörn Oltmann, the district office still does not know exactly what condition the gasometer is in. An agreement on the scope and timeframe of a renovation, which Oltmann's predecessor Sibyll Klotz (both Greens) had agreed with Reinhard Müller in 2014, did not materialize. Inquiries from the city councilor went unanswered.
At the end of November 2016, the State Monument Council dealt with the gasometer. After an inspection, he assured: Stability and operational safety are given. But he also found rust, mold and “critical points” on 24 support legs. At the meeting of the Monument Council, Euref CEO Müller and Johannes Tücks from the Euref Consulting Society of Architects and Engineers announced that the renovation would begin in 2020.
The steel parts should first be cleaned in a laser process and then repainted, the upper part of the gasometer should be filled with a glass body. For this purpose, the State Monument Council wishes an architecture competition according to the new federal guidelines for planning competitions and wants to be able to comment on specific plans before they are approved.
City councilor Jörn Oltmann strikes a conciliatory tone. The district office continues to strive to achieve a constructive cooperation with Reinhard Müller in an amicable way at the gasometer. "Ultimately, the aspect of economic efficiency in the preservation of architectural monuments must also be considered," says Oltmann.
