The triumphal arch which marked the entrance to the city of Glanum was built at the end of the reign of Augustus or at the beginning of that of Tiberius, near the "mausoleum" of the Julii which predates it by about fifty. years.

The two monuments are however opposed by their destinations (private for the "mausoleum", public for the triumphal arch), and even more by their spirit: while the "mausoleum" celebrates the accession to the Roman citizenship of a local family assimilated, the arc on the contrary evokes the conquest of Gaul by constraint, as can do, in the same way, the arcs of Orange or Carpentras.

The current form of the triumphal arch gives only a weak idea of ??the majesty it could have in antiquity: the entire upper part has disappeared, and the whole, protected at the end of the 18th century by a covering of slabs, today presents a double slope unrelated to the Roman volumes.

L'arc de triomphe qui signalait l'entrée de la ville de Glanum a été édifié à la fin du règne d'Auguste ou au début de celui de Tibère, à proximité du « mausolée » des Julii qui lui est antérieur d'une cinquantaine d'années.

Les deux monuments s'opposent pourtant par leurs destinations (privée pour le « mausolée », publique pour l'arc de triomphe), et plus encore par leur esprit : alors que le « mausolée » célèbre l'accession à la citoyenneté romaine d'une famille locale assimilée, l'arc au contraire évoque la conquête de la Gaule par la contrainte, comme peuvent le faire, de la même manière, les arcs d'Orange ou de Carpentras.

La forme actuelle de l'arc de triomphe ne donne qu'une faible idée de la majesté qu'il pouvait avoir dans l'antiquité : toute la partie supérieure a disparu, et l'ensemble, protégé à la fin du XVIIIe siècle par une couverture de dalles, présente aujourd'hui une double pente sans aucun rapport avec les volumes romains.
