Carlsbad Caverns in southeast New Mexico, feature the largest cave “room” in North America. Miles of paved pathways lead through countless cave formations, many with imaginative names. But judging from the number of bat-related souvenirs in the gift shop, Carlsbad Caverns is equally famous for the millions of Brazilian free-tailed bats that fly out of the cave every evening from spring through fall.

The group of formations seen on the stamp are in an area known as the Hall of Giants. This is not the first postage stamp to feature Carlsbad Caverns: They were also featured on a regular-issue postal card from 2002. Both stamps show the same formation: Giant Dome, albeit from different angles. Giant Dome stands 62 feet tall and has a diameter of 16 feet. It’s the largest stalagmite ever discovered and reaches all the way to the ceiling. This scene is located about 750 feet underground, so the coordinates provided are for cave entrance.
