Physicist Jens Rud Nielsen (1894-1979) was possibly the most prestigious scientist to every have an affiliation with The University of Oklahoma. After forty-two years at the California Institute of Technology, he was named director of OU's brand new Research Institute in 1949. This building, completed in 1948, housed the Institute. The addition to the east was named in honor of Nielsen. Research at OU has blossomed into many additional centers, but it all began right here.
And a bit of movie trivia: a scene from the 1996 film Twister was filmed right here, with the Research Institute serving as background. It didn't make the final cut, but you can view it in the "deleted scenes" feature on the DVD.
