[FR] Cette Fontaine est située Place Foire-le-Roi, à Tours.
Une première fontaine avait été construite en 1512 au centre de la place. Elle recevait son eau de Saint-Avertin au sud de Tours. Elle a été démolie en 1784, seul le bassin avait été conservé. La Fontaine actuelle date de 1835 : une nouvelle fontaine est établie à l’extrémité sud de la place avec réemploi d’une partie du mur du bassin initial.
Le pilier central de la Fontaine est de section carrée, et chacune de ses faces est ornée d'une tête de lion sculptée. Le matériau utilisé pour ces têtes de lion est la fonte. Un tuyau duquel s'écoule l'eau de la fontaine sort de la gueule de chaque lion.
La place Foire-le-Roi tire son nom du fait qu’elle était l’emplacement des Foires Franches établies par le Roi Jean Le Bon en 1536, puis confirmées par Louis XI et François 1er en 1545. Du XIVème au XVIIIème siècle, la Place Foire-le-Roi était un point très animé de Tours. Elle accueillait les marchands et les bateleurs de la Loire. Elle servait aussi de lieu pour le supplice du pilori et l’exécution des condamnés.
Le terre-plein et la fontaine sont classés au titre des Monuments historiques depuis le 13 mai 1935.

[EN] This fountain is located in Place Foire-le-Roi, in Tours.
A first fountain had been built in 1512 in the center of the square. It received its water from Saint-Avertin, south of Tours. It was demolished in 1784, only the basin was preserved. The current fountain dates from 1835: a new fountain was established at the southern end of the square with the re-use of part of the wall of the original basin.
The central pillar of the fountain is square in cross-section, and each of its faces is decorated with a sculpted lion's head. The material used for these lion heads is cast iron. A pipe from which the water of the fountain flows out of the mouth of each lion.
The place Foire-le-Roi takes its name from the fact that it was the location of the Foires Franches established by King Jean Le Bon in 1536, then confirmed by Louis XI and François 1er in 1545. From the 14th to the 18th century, the Place Foire-le-Roi was a very lively place in Tours. It welcomed merchants and boatmen from the Loire. It was also used as a place for the torture of the pillory and the execution of the condemned.
The terreplein and the fountain have been classified as historical monuments since May 13, 1935.
