[EN] The origin of the green pharmacy cross

With the caduceus, the green cross is the only emblem reserved for pharmacists whose use is allowed. Registered as a collective mark in 1984 by the National Council of the Order of Pharmacists, the green cross is in fact borrowed from the symbol of the International Organization of the Red Cross.

This cross of pharmacies was not always green, but red, a symbol of French pharmacies borrowed from the International Organization of the Red Cross which comes to the aid of the wounded and sick when there is a war or a disaster.

Founded at the end of the 19th century, the humanitarian organization had then chosen it as an emblem. At that time, many manufacturers of products added this emblem to their productions and pharmacists also adopted it as a symbol. But in 1913, the law restricted the use of this red cross so that citizens do not confuse pharmacies with the International Organization of the Red Cross. The pharmacists finally kept the cross but changed the color.

For some, green was chosen to recall the plant origin of many drugs. For others, the choice of color seems to have its roots in a regulation of May 19, 1796 which assigned military pharmacists armbands: green collars.

Pharmacists also have another symbol: the caduceus, a drawing representing a cup with a snake that wraps around. According to Greek origins, the snake symbolizes the art of healing, fertility and life while the cup is that of Hygie, the daughter of Aesculapius and goddess of health. The pharmaceutical caduceus, not to be confused with the medical caduceus (a snake curling around a stick) will take off in 1942 when the Superior Pharmacy Council, at the request of the State Secretariat for Health, decides to choose it as the emblem of French pharmacy.
