This sluice gate is used to control the water level along this short stretch of the C&O Canal. While most sections of the Canal do not hold water, the ones that do needed additional control measures to ensure flood damage does not occur, these sluices alleviate those issues. While they are hand operated, the control wheel or lever is removed when not in use.
