"Modernes Haus in historischem Antlitz

From here you have a great view of the Asian elephants!
Modern house with a historical look
The completely renovated historic elephant house meets all the requirements of modern, species-appropriate elephant husbandry. The house offers the elephants around 1,000 square meters with a spacious open-air area as well as eight boxes and a bathing pool.
The design of the elephant house enables flexible animal management. Each indoor box has an external access and is also connected to other boxes and the outdoor area in the house. The outdoor facilities are also designed in such a way that there are no dead ends. Plant islands offer privacy protection from conspecifics and visitors.
In a 90 square meter and more than three meter deep bathing pool with flow jets, the elephants can also go for a swim in the house. Since elephants clean their food from dirt, there is also a special feed washbasin here. Sand for skin care, hard covering for even wear on the soles of the feet and rubber flooring to protect the joints: with the different floor coverings, an important health precaution is already included in the elephant enclosure.
Precautions have also been taken for the safety of the animal keepers. While working in direct contact with the elephants up to now, the development is now towards so-called "protected contact". The zookeepers work with the elephants via a safe barrier. The new elephant house with its innovative indoor system with two training boxes enables the gradual transition to this elephant keeping in protected contact also in Hellabrunn.
