L'église du Sacré-Coeur se situe dans la partie ouest de l'ancienne ville de Chicoutimi, dans le quartier du Bassin.
En 1903, la paroisse du Sacré-Coeur est érigée dans le contexte de l'accroissement de la population de la ville, et plus particulièrement de celle du Bassin. Elle est confiée aux Eudistes, une congrégation religieuse fondée en France en 1643 et en exil au Québec pour fuir l'anticléricalisme. Ces derniers obtiennent également la charge de la préfecture apostolique du golfe du Saint-Laurent, qui deviendra vicariat apostolique en 1905, et la conserveront jusqu'en 1945.
Dès son arrivée, la congrégation reçoit de la Compagnie de pulpe de Chicoutimi, fondée en 1896, un terrain pour la cons-truction d'une église et d'un presbytère. La conception de l'ensemble religieux est confiée à l'architecte René-Pamphile Lemay (1870-1915). Celui-ci dessine les plans d'une église précédée d'un haut perron sous lequel se trouve une sacristie accessible par l'avant, sur le modèle notamment de la basilique du Sacré-Coeur à Paris (1876). Le sol étant instable, les Eudistes optent plutôt pour un emplacement situé sur le Cran Chaud, dont une partie appartient à la Compagnie de pulpe. Celle-ci cède à la congrégation ses droits de propriété en échange du terrain de l'ancienne chapelle du Sacré-Coeur (1892 et 1893). Lemay revoit le projet en fonction du nouveau site et en réduit l'importance afin de diminuer les coûts de construction. Les travaux, confiés à l'entrepreneur de Lévis Joseph Gosselin, débutent en 1903. La pierre est extraite d'une carrière spécialement ouverte pour l'occasion, au coin des rues Bossé et Taché, à l'exception de la pierre grise de la fa-çade.
Le gros oeuvre est achevé en 1905. La sacristie est temporairement logée dans le choeur en attendant son installation dans une section déjà excavée sous le perron. Ce projet est abandonné en 1915 lors de l'aménagement de la place de l'église avec son monument du Sacré-Coeur. La sacristie est érigée contre le chevet en 1919 et 1920, d'après les plans d'Alfred Lamontagne (1883-1967). Construite par Thomas Blanchette et Alphonse Pedneault, elle comprend au rez-de-chaussée une chapelle d'hiver au décor architectural élaboré. Une salle paroissiale destinée à abriter les oeuvres de jeu-nesse occupe l'étage. En 1924, la sacristie est dotée d'un maître-autel provenant de l'École de sculpture de Saint-Romuald.
En 1926, les Eudistes requièrent les services de Lamontagne pour le renouvellement de la structure de l'église et son ignifugation ainsi que pour l'achèvement du décor intérieur. Les travaux sont réalisés en 1928 et 1929. Des galeries laté-rales et une deuxième tribune arrière sont installées, et les boiseries de même que certaines pièces du mobilier en chêne sont exécutées. Les fonts baptismaux en marbre proviennent des ateliers Delwaide et Goffin, tandis que les ornements en plâtre sont fabriqués d'après des modèles sculptés par Louis Sorbonne. Sous la cure du père Joseph Nio, de 1935 à 1945, l'église fait l'objet de nombreux travaux. En 1938 et 1939, les cloisons du choeur existantes sont remplacées par des grilles en fer forgé et accueillent les autels latéraux. L'église est également dotée d'un orgue Casavant et Frères. En 1954, des vitraux provenant de la maison E. Rault sont installés.
En 1992, le site du patrimoine de la place de l'église Sacré-Coeur, qui englobe l'église, est constitué par la municipalité. En 1996, l'ancien maître-autel est démonté. Cette année-là marque également le départ des Eudistes de la paroisse du Sacré-Coeur.
L'église du Sacré-Coeur est classée en 2001. Son presbytère est classé au même moment. Ces deux monuments sont inclus dans le site patrimonial du Sacré-Coeur, classé aussi en 2001. Le site du patrimoine de la place de l'église Sacré-Coeur est devenu un site patrimonial cité à l'entrée en vigueur de la Loi sur le patrimoine culturel en 2012. .

[EN] The Sacré-Coeur Church is located in the western part of the old town of Chicoutimi, in the Bassin district. In 1903, the parish of Sacré-Coeur was erected against the backdrop of the growing population of the city, and more particularly that of the Basin. It is entrusted to the Eudists, a religious congregation founded in France in 1643 and in exile in Quebec to flee anticlericalism. The latter also obtained the charge of the apostolic prefecture of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which became apostolic vicariate in 1905, and would keep it until 1945. The stone was extracted from a quarry specially opened for the occasion, at the corner of Bossé and Taché streets, with the exception of the gray stone of the facade. The shell was completed in 1905. The sacristy was temporarily housed in the choir pending its installation in a section already excavated under the steps. This project was abandoned in 1915 when the church square was fitted out with its Sacré-Coeur monument. The sacristy was erected against the apse in 1919 and 1920, according to the plans of Alfred Lamontagne (1883-1967). Built by Thomas Blanchette and Alphonse Pedneault, it includes on the ground floor a winter chapel with elaborate architectural decor. A parish hall intended to house the works of youth occupies the floor. In 1924, the sacristy was equipped with a high altar from the School of Sculpture of Saint-Romuald. In 1926, the Eudists requested the services of Lamontagne for the renewal of the structure of the church and its fireproofing as well as for the completion of the interior decoration. The works were carried out in 1928 and 1929. Side galleries and a second rear gallery were installed, and the woodwork as well as certain pieces of oak furniture were executed. The marble baptismal font comes from the Delwaide and Goffin workshops, while the plaster ornaments are made from models sculpted by Louis Sorbonne. Under the care of Father Joseph Nio, from 1935 to 1945, the church was the subject of numerous works. In 1938 and 1939, the existing choir partitions were replaced by wrought iron gates and housed the side altars. The church also has a Casavant et Frères organ. In 1954, stained glass windows from the E. Rault house were installed. In 1992, the heritage site of the Place de l'Eglise Sacré-Coeur, which includes the church, was established by the municipality. In 1996, the old high altar was dismantled. This year also marks the departure of the Eudists from the parish of the Sacré-Coeur. The Sacré-Coeur church was listed in 2001. Its presbytery was listed at the same time. These two monuments are included in the heritage site of the Sacré-Coeur, also classified in 2001. The heritage site of the place of the Sacré-Coeur church became a heritage site cited on the entry into force of the Law on cultural heritage in 2012.
