Né vers 1558 en Saintonge, en France, Pierre Du Gua de Monts est le fils de Guy Du Gua et de Claire Gourmand.
Du Gua de Monts combat auprès du futur roi Henri IV durant les guerres de religion et obtient en récompense le poste de gouverneur de Pons. Il semble avoir fait des voyages au Nouveau Monde à la fin du XVIe siècle. Nommé lieutenant-général des côtes, terres et confins de l'Acadie, du Canada et autres lieux en Nouvelle-France en 1603, il reçoit cette commission sous condition d'établir des colons en Nouvelle-France et d'évangéliser les autochtones.
Du Gua de Monts fonde une compagnie de traite en 1604. Il recrute des colons prêts à s'établir au Nouveau Monde et invite Samuel de Champlain à participer à son expédition. Il arrive au cap de La Hève (La Have, en Nouvelle-Écosse) au mois de mai 1604 et parcourt les côtes atlantiques avec Champlain. Il nomme Port-Rossignol, Port-au-Mouton et le fleuve Saint-Jean. Il établit une colonie sur l'île Sainte-Croix (Dochet Island) et y fait construire des maisons et une palissade. Du Gua de Monts est également celui qui implante la première culture du blé en Nouvelle-France.
Du Gua de Monts commerce avec les autochtones au printemps 1605 et envoie Samuel de Champlain explorer les côtes du continent à la recherche d'un nouveau lieu de colonisation. Il fait démolir les maisons de l'île Sainte-Croix et déménage sa colonie à Port-Royal. Il retourne en France en septembre 1605. Incapable de garder son monopole sur le commerce des fourrures, il liquide sa compagnie en 1607.

Le buste de Pierre du gua de Monts repose sur un socle circulaire en granit situé au centre de la Terrasse Saint-Denis, à proximité des plaines d'Abraham, à Québec. On le voit coiffé d'un chapeau de feutre à larges bords orné d'une plume, d'une perruque qui lui tombe à la hauteur du cou et d'un collier orné de dentelle. Il porte un cordon tressé autour du cou et une barbe de style Van Dyke. Il porte une large bande de tissu brodée qui se croise devant sa chemise en soie.
